Miller

The surname Miller has a history dating back to the 12th Century.

It was particularly popular in the North in the old Viking strongholds.  This is not surprising as it is taken from the word mylnan, an Old Norse word for Miller.  It is clear that Miller and Milner were interchangeable in the early years of surname development.  The name forms one of a group of surnames found in documents following the Norman invasion that are taken from occupations.
